Williamstown was developed in tandem with Melbourne's early beginnings in the 1830s. Much of early Williamstown's unique character remains and is still highly valued by its residents. It has a reputation as being a tight-knit community that celebrates its rich heritage.

Indigenous Australia's occupied the area long before maritime activities shaped what is now modern Williamstown. People of the Kulin Nation were the first to call the area now known as Hobson's Bay home and lived on the coastal strip between Williamstown and Werribee.

Williamstown was of extreme importance to early colonial settlers in the Port Phillip Bay region as it was the entry point for many prospectors who came to Australia during the Gold Rush. It was even considered as a possible captial for the Colony of Victoria.

Williamstown is famous for its Surf-Life Saving and its numerous sailing and motor yacht clubs. It is also home of the Williamstown Seagulls Football Club which competes in the VFL.

As cultural hub, Williamstown is famous for its cafe and restaurant lifestyle along the picturesque Nelson's Place and The Strand which offers panoramic views of Melbourne and St Kilda.
